Fred Gwynne is great. King's simple narrative trajectory and what ought to be a really unpleasant look at dread and grief is sort of undercut by what I felt like was a thin layer of camp like the creepy but silly sister flashbacks for example That said it's so completely loaded with moments simultaneously indelible, gross, and a bit silly achilles heel, giggling killer baby, bloody shoe on the highway, etc.
I must have seen Mary Lambert's film adaptation of the Stephen King's novel a half a dozen times in the past and I must admit I was pleasantly surprised to discover that there were still a couple of scenes that still send shivers down my spine today! One in particular I found myself shouting at the big screen!
Thankfully there was nothing within my grasp for I know I would have chucked something at it as well ;-. Anywho my expenditure of great emotion was all for naught.. I fucking loved Pet Semetary , it scared the shit out of me and I loved every moment of that feeling. After overdosing on this movie for ten years I took a break, probably about a decade before finally revisiting this a few years ago. Even though it's still filled with effective moments, it unfortunately hasn't aged well for me.
Don't get me wrong I still enjoy Pet Semetary and it still has a lot to offer, I love the story and Fred Gwyne single handedly makes up for any faults I might bestow on this. This was surprisingly good.
I expected a bad cliche horror movie but I actually think it had some good scares and a good story. The acting was pretty average but I found all the characters likable and…. Pet Sematary is one of the most disturbing horror films ever made, and certainly the most tragic.
